TEAR GAS x TWITTER x IRAN

Tear gas and Twitter: Iranians take their protests online
by; Octavia Nasr (CNN Senior Editor, Middle East Affairs)

(CNN) — Iranian protesters have found a new outlet to mobilize and take action. The presidential election has proved how much opposition supporters can demand change without necessarily taking to the streets. Just give them a computer and an Internet connection and watch what they can do.

At the height of the protests and disorder in Tehran on Saturday and Sunday, Twitter was used to give graphic accounts to a worldwide audience – even if they were a maximum of 140 characters.

Tweets from “Change for Iran” were among several that offered real time updates: “…my friend saying more than 100 students arrested, I can’t confirm this but the numbers are high. bastards just attacked us for no reason, I lost count of how much tear gas they launched at us! …we have now some students with urgent need of medical attention I’m calling out to all ppl who can come here don’t leave us.”

–it’s sad to see that every time i turn on the TV i see this; people seeking change but not able to conquer it. i don’t know what it’s like to live in a country where there’s war on the streets at the drop of a dime. sure, i live in an area where there are shootings and what not, but that does not compare. i just hope that one day peace will hover over iran…

Vinyl sales to hit another high point in 2009

The resurgent vinyl market isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. In fact, recent figures released by Nielsen SoundScan indicate that overall U.S. vinyl sales will once again set a benchmark in 2009, with sales up 50% through the first five months of the year.

SoundScan predicts vinyl sales will reach 2.8 million units in 2009, up from 1.9 million in 2008, a record since SoundScan began tracking sales data in 1991. Already in 2009, vinyl sales have topped 1 million. At this point last year, vinyl sales stood at 701,000 copies. To be fair, the number is still tiny compared to overall album sales…Rest of story here
